The presence of blood in the urine is not an uncommon ailment. The presence of red blood cells in one’s urine is a condition termed as hematuria. This condition may at times be caused due to urinary tract infections while on the other hand it may not be anything serious at all.
However, a medical examination is always recommended to rule out the possibility of a UTI (urinary tract infection) or any other problem. Blood in one’s urine may not always be visible to the naked eye, particularly if the quantity of blood is minimal or less; the urine then tends to appear normal. This is termed as microscopic hematuria, as the blood cells are only visible under a microscope. When the quantity of blood is large enough for it to be noticed, the condition is called frank or gross hematuria. In this case the urine has a pinkish, brown, smoky or red appearance.
This condition can be caused due to a large number of reasons such as; an injury, infection or inflammation of the urinary tract, kidney stones, cancer of the prostate, bladder or kidneys, urinary tract blockage and as a side effect of certain medications. If the blood is on account of an UTI, then it can be treated with a few simple home remedies. Cranberry juice is highly recommended for this condition. Drink 2-3 glasses of the juice per day. It helps in flushing any bacteria that may be present in the urinary tract. The juice made from radish leaves can also help in curing this condition. 1- 2 cups of the juice had everyday, should yield results in about two weeks time. Water holds a very important place, when it comes to treating any kind of UTI. Eight to ten glasses of water per day will help in flushing out the kidneys adequately. Boil 150 ml of water and to this add a teaspoon of lemon juice. Once the mixture cools pour it into a bottle and keep sipping on it throughout the day. This is also known to be an effective remedy. Mix together equal quantities of coconut water and spinach juice and then drink the concoction. The nitrates and potassium present in these ingredients will act as a safe and effective diuretic. However, please bear in mind that if the bleeding does not cease and is being accompanied by pain and a burning sensation, then seeks medical assistance immediately.
