Remedies and cure for dark circles under the eyes

What can I do about dark circles under the eyes?
(20 Sep 2007)

Dark circles are a very common complaint as they tend to give a person the appearance of being constantly tired or ill. Dark circles can be caused due to a large number of reasons namely; depression or stress, genetic factors, inappropriate eating habits, lack of sleep, allergies, an excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, tiredness or fatigue, prolonged exposure to the sun and as a side effect of certain medications. Whatever the reasons may be, no one feels comfortable with these circles under the eyes.

The appearance of dark circles can be reduced considerably with the help of a few home remedies. Cucumber is considered to be one of the most popular and effective treatments for dark circles. Take a bowl of cucumber juice and dip two clean cotton pads in it. Place these cotton pads on each eye for 10-15 minutes. This will help in soothing and relaxing the eyes. You can place cucumber slices on the eyes as well, this will yield the same result. Take equal amounts of cucumber and potatoes and squeeze the juice out of them. Mix the two juices together and then apply a few drops on the area below the eyes. Let the mixture stay on for 15 minutes, after which rinse it off with chilled water. Mint leaves possess various medical qualities that can be helpful in treating dark circles.  Apply a few drops of chilled mint juice on the dark circles and allow it to stay on for 20 minutes. Then wash it of with cool water. This will cool the eyes and will also get rid off the dark circles.

Rose water can also be applied on to the dark circles, with the help of a cotton pad. This is also considered to be a very helpful remedy. Mix together 2 tablespoons each of lemon juice and tomato juice. Apply this mixture on the area below the eyes. After 15 minutes, rinse it off with chilled water. Almond oil is also good when it comes to dark circles. Dab on a few drops of the oil on the dark circles and very gently, massage it into the skin. This will help in lightening them. Always exercise extreme caution while applying anything below the eyes, as this is a very sensitive area. If you do get something into your eyes while implementing any of these remedies, then make sure that you rinse your eyes immediately with cold water.

Dark circles can be a result of nutrient deficiency, lack of sleep or rest, stress or less hydration in the body. Try the following home remedies for dark circles -
  • Freshly grated raw potato juice is a very effective remedy for lightening dark circles. Apply this with the help of a cotton ball under the eyes and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Similarly fresh cucumber juice also works well.
  • For a cooling and relaxing effect dip two cotton balls in cold rose water and place it on the eyes for 10 minutes daily especially before going to sleep.
  • Massage your eyes lightly with almond oil in circular motion using the tips of your fingers. Also to improve the circulations under the eye lightly tap the upper and lower eyelids with the tip of your fingers.
  • A sound sleep for at least 8 hours a day is very important to eliminate the dark circles.
  • Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid taking any kind of stress as far as possible.
