It is often a major challenge to take care of oily hair, even though your skin’s natural oil (sebum) is actually beneficial to hair. Sebum, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands at the hair roots, acts as a natural conditioner for the hair and prevents them from damage. Sebum is also important to maintain the scalp in a healthy condition.

However, if your body produces too much of sebum, you soon discover some unpleasant side-effects. The skin can erupt with acne, while your hair looks greasy and lifeless. Oily hair is also difficult to style and maintain. Unfortunately, there is no way to reduce the body’s natural production of sebum. Excessive production of sebum can be caused by many factors, including heredity, hormone fluctuations (especially during puberty and in adult women), and hair texture or density. However, there are many remedies that can help you reduce the challenges of dealing with oily hair.

You have mentioned that you have already tried using lemon juice on your hair, but have not achieved any results. While lemon juice can provide some level of temporary effect, you need to adopt a complete hair care regime for better results. You can begin by discarding manufactured shampoos that contain chemicals. Try a mild homemade shampoo that will help cleanse the extra oil and improve circulation in the scalp. Begin by boiling 2 tablespoons each of dried peppermint and spearmint, along with 1 tablespoon of dried sage in a cup of water for around 5 minutes. Allow the liquid to cool, strain and pour into approximately half a cup of baby shampoo. Since you have oily hair, you should probably use this mild shampoo everyday to control the oil levels. You can also make a simple hair pack by applying a single egg (depending on your hair volume) and leaving it on for 10 minutes before rinsing.

Try using a mild acidic solution such as diluted vinegar or fresh lemon juice for rinsing. Tea, which contains tannic acid, is also a good substitute. Avoid using any hair conditioners; in your case, you already have an excess of natural conditioner (sebum)! Also, take care not to rub your hair too vigorously since this will help spread the oil from the roots throughout your hair. For the same reason, comb your hair with gentle motions and avoid the legendary ‘100 strokes’. If you take these simple steps and give your hair the care it deserves, there is no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy a heedful of healthy, well-groomed hair.

Oily hair can be due to a variety of reasons like, fineness of the hair, heredity, hormonal changes, excess heat and humidity and stress. Here are some simple solutions to get rid of the excess oil on your scalp.
  • Keep your hair clean. Oily hair tends to collect more dirt and they can become further messy. Shampoo your hair ever alternate days. Use shampoo especially formulated for oily hair.
  • Massage your scalp with the tip of your fingers while shampooing. This will help to squeeze out extra oil from the scalp.
  • Shampoo twice and leave it for 5 minutes on the scalp and hair each time. Avoid using a conditioner, if at all you use just apply it on the ends.
  • Make your last rinse with apple cider vinegar. This will also help to reduce the oil from the scalp.
  • Boil 50 g mint in 500 ml water for 20 minutes. Strain this mixture and mix it with your shampoo, this will also help to treat oily hair.
