At your age, acne is an extremely common and extremely annoying skin condition. In fact, acne is a pretty harmless skin condition that affects a large percentage of both men and women. Strange as it may seem, it is caused by the natural, healthy functioning of your skin.
Each and every day, your skin gets rid of old, dead skin cells to make way for fresh, healthy cells. This is also the reason why many beauty experts advise you to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. However, sometimes the dead skin cells end up blocking your skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands). As you have experienced, this happen more often during puberty, since the skin gets thicker. Once your oil gland is blocked, the sebum (oil) is trapped inside, leading to the bacterial infection called acne. It will show on your skin as whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples. Pimples appear as raised, round bumps on the skin and can be itchy and irritable. While it is very tempting to try and burst pimples by squeezing, please do not do this! The reason is simple; acne is a bacterial infection and bursting it will only spread the infection to the surrounding skin. In any case, your body will naturally heal and remove the acne in a few days. However, you do have options that can help speed up the healing and avoid new acne. First, take care to gently cleanse your face regularly to remove dead skin cells and avoid excess of sebum. It is recommended that you use a mild cleanser containing salicylic acid, which is very effective in preventing blocked pores. You could team this with over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide, which has good antibacterial properties. If you prefer a natural solution, then a 5% solution of tea tree oil in water will provide you with similar benefits. You should shower as soon as possible after any exercise or strenuous activity to get ride of excessive oil on the skin’s surface. Avoid using oil-based cosmetics or applying make-up that blocks your pores. Sometimes stress can act as a trigger for an acne breakout; make sure you keep some time during the day to simply rest and relax.
It is a common belief that fried or fatty foods can lead to acne. While medical studies do not support this idea, choosing a healthy diet can only be beneficial to your overall health. Finally, remember to be patient; in most people acne disappears forever after they cross their teenage years.
