Treatment for vitiligo -

Vitiligo is a condition, wherein the melanocytes are terminated. It is a pigmentation disorder, wherein the retina and the mucous membranes are affected. Appearance of white patches is typical characteristics of vitiligo.

It is a condition of concern, as the change in appearance results in stress, sorrow and despair. It is not a contagious disorder. Heredity plays a vital role.

Temporary masking solutions are available. Steroids are helpful in synthesis of the deficient melanocytes. Return of the symptoms is seen on termination of steroids. Surgery is recommended in severe cases, wherein skin grafting is done. Treatment options in the early stages include exposure to UV light. Oral medications and topical creams, available with the pharmacists are helpful to a certain extent. Other options are corticosteroid creams, repigmenting agents and immunosuppressant. Exposure to the sun for an hour in the morning and evening proves beneficial. Emotional stress is avoided. A paste of radish seeds with vinegar is an effective remedy. Leukoderma or vitiligo is also treated by avoiding caffeinated beverages and other junk foods.
