Information on ulcer colitis - Ulcerative colitis, also referred to as ulcerative proctitis, as the name indicates results in the inflammation of the colon. Ulcers occur on the lining, resulting in the death of the cells. It is a hereditary phenomenon and occurs majorly between 15 and 30 years.

Nicotine patches are useful in treating this complication, though the exact mechanism is unknown. Pain killers under the guidance of a physician are recommended. Inflammation also results in narrowing of the intestines, thereby causing constipation. Intestinal bleeding is compensated with iron supplements. Surgical procedures are lastly opted for including removal of the colon and rectum.
