Diet for Thyroid Problems

What diet should be taken in thyroid?
( 7 Feb 2012)

Nutrition is important, whether you suffer from thyroid problems or not. However, if you suffer from thyroid problems, there are several foods you will have to eliminate from your diet. The types of food depend on the type of thyroid problem that you have.

For instance, if you suffer from hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid, you will have to avoid foods such as:-
  • Goitrogens: These are foods that prevent the thyroid gland from functioning properly and effectively. Cabbage, turnips, mustard greens, broccoli, kale, soybeans, millet, pine nuts, cassava root fall into this category of goitrogens. However, these foods can be eaten in small amounts, if they are cooked. This is because the goitrogenic element is offset during cooking.
  • Garlic should also be avoided if you are hypothyroid as it can reduce the iodine intake.
  • Junk food and fast food are taboo as well.

Foods that should be included in a hypothyroid diet are:-

  • Iodine rich foods: These include iodized salt, sea salt, cheese; fresh fish like haddock and cod, eggs, sea weeds like see kelp and so on.
  • Protein and foods rich in fatty acids: Protein helps to control weight and thyroid levels. Fatty acids help to maintain the hormonal system. Make sure you include green, leafy vegetables, lean meat, milk, walnuts, almonds and whole grains.

If you suffer from hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid gland, you must include foods such as:-

  • Cauliflower, peaches, pears, soybeans, turnips, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and spinach. These foods help to suppress the production of the thyroid hormone which helps in controlling hyperthyroidism.

Foods to avoid in hyperthyroidism are:-

Stimulants like alcohol, tea, coffee, nicotine and so on should be avoided because they increase the metabolic rate of a person. Dairy products should be kept at a minimum as well in such a diet.
