My son is 1yr 6months old he is having loose motion from last one & half week, he was hospitalized on last Thursday there they gave him iv fluid, he was discharged on Monday but he is having still intestinal infection I'm worried what will I do?

Intestinal infections may be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. These organisms can affect and interfere with the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. Babies and young children can develop intestinal infections due to food intolerance. A common cause of such infections is lactose intolerance. Children may also react adversely to additives or preservatives in food. Diarrhea can also occur due to food allergies.

Allergy to milk protein can results in skin rash, coughing and fever. Loose motions and stomach trouble may sometimes occur when there are changes in the child's diet. Poor hygiene can also contribute to the spread of intestinal infections. Not washing the hands properly after using the bathroom or before eating can cause pathogens to enter the digestive tract. Infections that increase in severity or persist for long periods of time should be evaluated thoroughly by the doctor so that further complications do not arise. Here are some ways to alleviate symptoms of intestinal infection in children

  • Diarrhea often leads to dehydration and hence it is essential that the child consumes plenty of fluids. Oral rehydration solutions may be given to the child to replace the loss of fluids. Water, clear broths and pure fruit juice may also be given to prevent dehydration in children. Breastfeeding can continue since it is full of nutrients and will help to elevate the fluid levels in the child's body.
  • Probiotics are beneficial in alleviating diarrhea and stomach distress and are available in the form of supplements. These may be given to the child to reduce the severity of the symptoms.
  • It is important not to administer any over the counter medications to the child as these may have certain negative effects. Also medications that are used to alleviate diarrhea in adults should not be given to children. It is best to contact your doctor again and apprise him of your child's condition.
