Short Bowel Syndrome also commonly refered to as SBS, is a condition wherein a person is unable to properly absorb food nutrients as a result of severe intestinal problems or if a large part of the intestines is surgically removed. As you may be aware, nutrients from the food are absorbed in the small intestines. Food from the stomach is squeezed through a valve called sphincter into the duodenum, and here it gets mixed with some digestive enzymes.

The food is then massaged into the jejunum or ileum. Nutrients absorbed by the small intestine are then passed into the individual’s blood stream. SBS basically refers to some kind of failure of the person’s small intestines to absorb food.

Treatment of short bowel syndrome is mainly aimed at providing relief from the symptoms. Here are some tips to help give you relief from the symptoms.
  • Try and follow a high-calorie diet. The diet should include food that provides certain type of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It should also provide you essential minerals and vitamins.
  • Check with your health care provider if he can provide some minerals and vitamins through injections.
  • Make sure you increase your intake of vitamin B12 and folic acid.
  • With the help of medications, try and lengthen the time nutrients from food are left in the small intestine.
  • If you are suffering from mild SBS, then eat small frequent meals instead of three large meals. Six to seven meals will result in better absorption and digestion.
  • Restrict your fluid intake during meal times.
Pain in the stomach could also be due to a problem with organs that are close to your abdominal cavity. For example, diseases of the kidneys, lower lungs, ovaries or uterus could cause the pain as well. Discuss your symptoms with your health care provider and make sure you do not have any other problems.
