Symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome

This time my periods did not come, but I am getting cramps in my stomach everyday almost overdue by 1 week. What should I do so that my periods come.

Abdominal cramping and pain before a menstrual period is a symptom of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It is a common occurrence and a large number of women experience this discomfort before they get their period. However abdominal cramps followed by a delayed period or no period could be indicative of certain other conditions.

  • In the early days of pregnancy, just after conception, there is likely to be some amount of cramping. This occurs when the fertilized egg attaches or implants itself into the wall of the uterus. When implantation occurs, there could also be slight bleeding.
  • In case pregnancy is ruled out, then cramps without a period may also be indicative of reproductive problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome or endometriosis. Both diseases are associated with stomach cramps and delayed menstruation.
  • Cramping is also known to occur due to ovulation. This is the process where there is an increase in estrogen and progesterone. The elevation in hormonal levels causes the rupture of a follicle in the ovary and an egg is released. Many women experience slight cramping at this stage. This could be because the follicle stretches the ovary surface just before the egg is released.
  • Abdominal cramps, pain and irregular periods may even be on account of growths in the uterus. These growths can hamper the functioning of the uterus. Uterine fibroid is an example of such a growth. The fibroids form and grow in the muscles or lining of the uterus.

In case you are not able to determine the cause of your delayed period, it is best to consult a doctor. The menstrual cycle does fluctuate depending on your health, stress levels, diet, exercise and intake of medications. But just to be sure and to rule out the possibility of more serious conditions, it is advisable to seek your doctor’s advice.
