Relieve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is best to heal carpal tunnel
(22 Sep 2011)

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is excess pressure on the median nerve. This is the nerve that extends from the forearm to the hand. When the tissues of the wrist tendons swell, they compress the median nerve and symptoms such as numbness, pain and tingling are experienced in the hands and fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is repetitive movement of the hand and fingers. Here are some natural ways to deal with carpal tunnel:

  • Injury and inflammation is less likely to occur when the circulatory system and repair mechanisms of the body are functioning well. Therefore it is important to maintain healthy dietary habits, exercise regularly and get adequate sleep and rest. Smoking should be avoided as this can hamper circulation.
  • The wrist often becomes stiff and painful when it is used continuously. The moment there is fatigue in the muscles or joints of the wrists, it is essential to change your position or pattern of movement. It is also advisable to take regular breaks from work so that the wrist muscles have a chance to rest.
  • It is a common tendency to use just the thumb, middle and index fingers when gripping anything. This can strain the wrist considerably. Hence when you grip an object, use the palm or engage the entire hand.
  • Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome such as inflammation, pain and swelling can be relieved by applying ice compresses. Do this 2 to 3 times daily for about 15 minutes each time.
  • Avoid using heat on the wrist as this can worsen the symptoms since heat can cause swelling of the tissues.
  • Extracts of the herb Ginkgo are believed to be beneficial in easing swelling and improving blood flow. They are also known to help in healing and protecting the nerves.
