What are the signs and symptoms of fever in children?

Fever is a condition where the body temperature rises as the individual’s immune system fights again some infection, disease or virus. One of the first obvious signs and symptoms of fever in children is a raised body temperature.

This will be accompanied by thirst, listlessness, fatigue and irritability. One must also note that the child will not be sweating at this time as the body does not make an attempt to cool itself down. The child is likely to feel weak and dull during the entire phase of the illness. Loss of taste for food is another symptom of fever seen in most children. There are numerous causes of fever in children as their bodies take time to learn how to deal with the variety of infections and diseases that are present in the environment. Extreme high fever, over 104 degrees, must be treated as an emergency. In all other cases, one can use methods to comfort the child while giving him or her, the medication prescribed by the doctor for the condition that is suspected. Fever lasts for the entire duration of the illness and subsides once the body fights the infection and begins to get back to its healthy state.

Can diet play an important role in treating fever in children?

A child is said to be suffering from fever when his or her body temperature is consistently above 99 degrees Fahrenheit and where there are symptoms such as fatigue, listlessness and body ache. Fever occurs when the body is attempting to fight off an infection, illness or disease that has invaded the body. Fever tends to occur more often in children as they do not have the requisite immunity to deal with the onslaught of the infection. A diet for fever in children must be light yet nutritious as diet does play an important role in helping the child recover from the condition quickly. The diet also plays an important role of helping to strengthen the child’s ability to deal with the illness in the first place. The diet of the child should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are relatively easy to digest when compared with processed foods and heavy foods. Some of the best food for fever includes ‘cooling’ foods such as cucumbers and leafy vegetables. The consumption of liquids is also very important at this stage. Liquids help with cooling and also help with regular urination, something that can help remove toxins from the body. Juices also provide an energy boost to the individual.
