Treatment for UTI

I think you are referring to UTI. Urinary Tract Infections in children is generally caused due to inadequate consumption of water, holding in urine for long periods and unhygienic or incorrect urinating practices/environment. It is thus important to teach your child to urinate regularly and to empty the bladder completely, instead of taking quick “loo-breaks” during commercial breaks!

Teach your daughter to lower her underpants completely and sit comfortably on the seat while urinating and to wipe herself well after she goes to the bathroom. Ensure that your children drink plenty of water and go the bathroom frequently so that there is no possibility of a UTI.

Certain foods also irritate the bladder and make the child feel like urinating frequently – carbonated drinks and soda are the main irritants, but beverages containing caffeine, chocolate, citrus foods and drinks consumed in excess can also have the same effect.

However, this doesn't always lead to a UTI and there is no established co-relation between the consumption of these foods and UTI. Antibiotics on the other hand can lead to UTI – certain antibiotics kill the good bacteria that live in the genital area.

Consequently harmful bacteria get an opportunity to grow there and that leads to UTI, so avoid giving your child antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. Finally, if you suspect that your child has UTI, then consult a doctor. After a urine test establishes UTI, a course of medicines shall be prescribed which should be continued for as long as the doctor says since the infection may return if the medicine is stopped prematurely.
