What are Styes? Styes are bumps on the eyelid. When an oil gland on the eyelid gets inflamed, at the edge of the lid, it is called a stye.
A stye is swollen and red, and quite like a pimple. Styes are tender.
Causes: A stye is caused due to bacteria that enters the hair follicle and into the eyelash. There are oil glands in the hair follicles that swell up after bacteria enter. While pimples and acne appear on the skin, styes occur on the eyelid. It is possible to get more than one stye.
Styes grow over a period of few days and then can drain out and heal on their own. When the inflamed oil gland is completely blocked, then a stye turns into chalazion. A large chalazion can cause vision problems.
Symptoms: Some of the symptoms of styes include redness and swelling. The eye also becomes more sensitive to light, and you feel that there is a foreign body in your eye. You can consult a doctor, who can detect the sty by looking at your eye.
Treatment: While a stye will heal itself over a period of time, you can apply a warm compress for a few minutes, a few times a day. You should not try to squeeze the stye or scratch it. Give it time and it will heal on its own. Your doctor might give you antibiotic creams to hasten the healing process and prevent infection.
Complications:
- The infection may spread further – from the follicle to the eyelid tissue.
- The bacteria may spread to the other hair follicles.
Prevention: Prevention is better than cure. Make sure that your hands are washed before you touch your eye or the skin around it. Keep your eyelids clean and wash off the extra oil that pools in at the edges.
Home Remedies:
- Use a warm compress on the stye to improve the blood circulation and boost the white blood cells that will fight off the infection. Soak a clean cloth in warm water and wring it out. Then place the warm compress on the eyelid for a few minutes. Make sure the water is not too hot.
- Apply warm compresses a few times a day.
- Do not apply eye makeup if you have a stye as that might contaminate the sty and cause more problems.
- Make sure not to pick, push, or squeeze the stye.

Treatment for sty
A stye is caused by a bacterial infection and it affects the follicle of your eyelash. As a result of the infection you will observe a tiny lump on the outside of your eye. This is not a permanent condition and the sty usually goes down in a few days. However, if you notice any discharge, pain, itching of in your eyes, then you should consult a doctor.
Remember that you must never scratch, squeeze or pinch the stye. This will only transfer the infection to various parts of the eye and worsen the situation.
You can dip a towel in some hot water and hold it against the affected eye. You can try applying some castor oil to the stye since this is believed to shrink the growth. A wet tea bag also helps. For this you can either wet a tea bag by holding it under the tap or else you can steep the tea bag and then, when it has cooled down, use it on your eye. Another easy remedy involves peeling a raw potato. Scrape pieces of the potato from inside the vegetable. Now wrap these in a piece of clean cloth and hold it against your affected eye. After a little while you can throw away the scrapings in the cloth and replace them with fresh ones.
