Treatment for neck pain

neck pain and burning between shoulders, please help.
(14 Sep 2007)

Neck pain can happen because of a variety of reasons like bad sleeping habits, bad posture, strain or stress. Neck pain can also happen because of injury. When the muscles of the neck become tense, the blood circulation decreases and all the muscles do not get adequate blood.

This causes pain, which in turn tenses the muscles much more. You must work with a physiotherapist if the pain is too much. However, if you want to get relief at home, try a few simple home remedies.

Home Remedies to Treat Neck Pain:
  • If you have a neck pain, lie down and keep your head on a thin, flat pillow. This will give it a chance to heal on its own.
  • Ice is an effective remedy to numb the pain and decrease the swelling. Place some ice in a plastic packet or a handkerchief, and place the icepack on the place where it pains. Apply the pack a few times a day.
  • Heat can also reduce the pain. Apply a hot water bottle or wet towel to the inflamed, tense area. Alternatively, use an infra red lamp to get relief from the pain.
  • If you feel that your neck pain is due to stress, practice stress-relieving tactics like yoga, meditation, deep-breathing exercises. Listen to slow, peaceful music; practice a hobby; and, get some exercise regularly to trigger off the endorphins, drain out stress, and increase your fitness level and blood circulation.
  • If it’s bad posture or working at the computer for long hours that triggers off the neck pain, then take short breaks frequently and do a few essential shoulder, neck and arm exercises to improve the blood circulation.
  • Massage can also help. Get your neck and back massaged by a massage therapist regularly. Massage not only kneads the muscles, relaxes the body and the mind, and flushes out the toxins but also loosens the neck and treats the pain.
  • If the pain is a lot, then take a pain reliever to get relief.
  • You also need to work on your posture as wrong posture can often be the root cause of neck pain. Keep your spine straight and do not curve your back or hunch your shoulders. Take the help of a wall to align your back.
  • If you are overweight, then loose weight. Eat healthy foods, exercise regularly and follow a healthy lifestyle. Work on muscle toning exercises to build strength.
  • An active lifestyle will also prevent neck and back pain.

Sounds like stress, or a pinched nerve, or maybe a damaged vertebrae.  You should find a reputable chiropractor that knows alternative medicine, too.  Some chiros just twist your neck and let you go home.  A good one will assess your entire alignment and go from there.

 Hope this helps.
