Diarrhea in children is very common and is caused by a virus. In most children, the viral infection occurs for a period of time, and it gets treated on its own. Eventually, as the viral cycle finishes, the children get healthy.

However, there are instances when there is such a severe loss of fluids from the body that it could be dangerous for the child. Viral diarrhea in children is typically associated with fever and vomiting. It is possible for the illness to continue for several days. This is usually the gestation period of the virus. This virus is infectious and is usually transmitted due to physical contact with an infected person. The treatment usually focuses on prevention of dehydration and elimination of the virus. Children are usually more susceptible to dehydration.

Dehydration in this condition is usually characterized by decrease in the frequency of urination. The child may keep crying but not produce any tears. The mouth runs completely dry and becomes sticky. There can even be a rapid loss of weight and extreme thirst. Medical help should be sought immediately. If your child is less than six months old and is showing any signs of dehydration, it is best to get medical help so that the condition doesn’t get aggravated. If there is blood in your child’s stool or the frequency of vomiting increases so much that the child is vomiting soon after drinking something, the condition should be considered severe. The child, at this time, may also experience abdominal pain and discomfort.

To treat your child, simply add a lot of liquids to the diet. Prepare an oral rehydration solution by mixing some salt and sugar in water. This will help maintain the electrolyte balance in your child’s body and will help keep the child hydrated. Some of the oral rehydration solutions commercially prepared in the powder form and are easily available in the market. You may even feed the child soup or watery pulses. Milk could make diarrhea worse so refrain from giving it to your child. Instead, juices can be given to the sick child. If the dehydration is very severe, intravenous fluids are the only option. The child has to be taken to the hospital in such a case for treatment.

Usually, anti-diarrhea medicines or antibiotics are not given in such a case because it could be harmful to the child. The doctor may ask for a stool test to determine the exact cause of the diarrhea.
