Treat sinus infection

how to cure a sinus infection?
(17 Sep 2007)

In layman’s language, the word sinus refers to any cavity, space, or area. This cavity may be present anywhere in our body. It may be in nasal passage, heart, anus, ears, or eyes.

These sinuses are mainly lined by a thin mucosal membrane which produces mucus and provides conditioning to the chambers. There may be chances of a blockage in these air filled spaces (sinus) by virus, bacteria or any other micro-organisms, smoke, or pollutants which leads to infection, allergy, or swelling, ultimately causing inflammation.

The inflammation in these body cavities is termed as sinusitis. The word ‘itis’ actually refers to inflammation. In response to the blockage, the body starts producing more mucus in the chambers to get rid of the allergens, but it worsens the condition by blocking it further. The various symptoms of sinusitis involve pain in the face, snoring, bad breath, loss of sense of smell, and nasal discharge. Sinusitis is more commonly linked with migraine. With the treatment of sinusitis, relief in migraine is also achieved. The cases of sinusitis have grown higher in number within the last few decades. The underlying reason for it can be visualized as an increase in environmental pollution. There may be chances where the patient catches sinusitis for his entire life. Usually, patients don’t take it seriously, because they have the misconception that sinusitis is a general nasal infection. Moreover, physicians feel no need of strong medicinal treatment in the initial stages.

Treatments involve pain killers like medicated vapor rubs, menthol, and acetaminophen. If bacterial infection persists, the patient may be prescribed antibiotics for 10-14 days. As pain killers are not readily acceptable by patients due to their various side effects, numerous home remedies are preferred. During the initial stages, taking a nap for one hour in a dark room is very beneficial. Applying a towel dampened with cold water to the forehead is also useful. Repeating this treatment several times greatly improves the patient’s condition. For severe headache, the feet should be washed with warm water.

Eat jalapeno pepper for sinus headaches. The symptoms will subside as soon as this treatment is initiated. A decoction of powdered mustard seeds in water is helpful when instilled in the nostrils. Drinking ripe grape juice is also an effective measure to redress sinus headaches.
For obtaining sinus relief, apply the paste from dry ginger with milk or water to the forehead. Another effective home remedy for sinus is the paste of basil leaves with cloves and dried ginger applied on the forehead. Various decongestants like peppermint and other essential oils like eucalyptus oil, rosemary, and lemongrass are useful for opening up the blockage in the sinus. Steam inhalation gives instant relief from severe sinusitis pain. Hot soups are also found to be useful in treating sinusitis. Drinking plenty of water before going to bed is also helpful in draining the sinuses.
