Diabetes is a disorder that cannot be cured permanently. To live with this disorder means that you have to have an effective diabetes management regime. This is vital to leading a quality life with this disorder.
For effective management of diabetes, a healthy lifestyle is of the utmost importance. Regular exercise, a healthy and balanced diet, and control of sugar intake are all necessary. Apart from this, it is also important to watch your weight and to take necessary measures to prevent any fluctuations. A diabetic’s diet is always aimed towards preventing or reducing any complications that may arise out of the disorder. The first step towards that is to keep the blood glucose under check. For both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, it is absolutely essential to improve and control glycemic levels. By just controlling the glucose levels, you can control complications in the kidneys, nervous system, and the eyes.
Along with controlling sugar, the amount of cholesterol and lipids that you consume also has to be watched. Cutting down on cholesterol and lipids can help reduce the chances of having any cardiovascular complications by almost 40 percent. Keeping these things in mind, go in for a diet that is low in cholesterol, sugar, and lipids. Eat only as much that fills your appetite and keep the number of your meals fixed. This will prevent you from indulging too much, or overeating. Make a schedule for your medicines. If it is possible, set a time to take each medicine everyday. If you have a set time for taking medicines, you will be more likely to take them on a regular basis. Also set a time for exercising. No matter what happens, try not to miss your exercise regime. Make certain changes to your diet. The following tips will help your get started.
Consume more amounts of starches. Eat brown (whole wheat) breads, cereals, and vegetables that are starchy. Six servings per day should be a good start. For breakfast, have muesli or cereal with cold milk. A sandwich or bagel with a glassful of milk will also work fine. To your salads, add potatoes or cooked beans. Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. Whenever you are hungry, snack upon a fruit. Try to have at least five servings of fruit every day. A piece of fruit or two and a glass of milk can also be used to substitute a meal just in case you’ve over indulged in the previous meal.

You should eat a well-balanced diet composed of sufficient amounts of protein and minimize high glycemic index foods. High glycemic index foods are those which convert to sugar quickly in the body --the higher the number, the more peaks and valleys in your blood sugars. I like the data base shown on medosa.com, but there are many other websites which list the glycemic index of foods. Try to pair a carbohydrate with a fat to slow the release of insulin in your body. Consult a trained health care practitioner to help you with meal planning if you are not familiar with the nutrient values of foods and how to shop efficiently. Diabetes can be managed in most instances with the proper combination of food choices and exercise. Good luck! Dr. Karen Benton, Naturopathic Physician
