Although not dangerous to health, stretch marks are very unsightly and therefore, unwanted. For those who have them, stretch marks can be very frustrating. You may have these streaks at certain places on your body, and no matter where you have them, you try to hide them as best as you can.
Stretch marks are caused when the collagen that gives the skin its elasticity gets damaged. Usually stretch marks occur due to rapid changes in the amount of fat tissues or muscle. Both gain and loss of fat, and muscle tissues can cause stretch marks. Initially, these marks are dark red in color. With time, however, they fade and become faint white marks. It is therefore recommended that exercises be done on a sustained pace so that there is no sudden gain or loss of weight.
Today, because people have become very conscious about their appearances, many creams and lotions that claim to remove stretch marks are being sold commercially. Some of these products do help your skin become firmer by repairing the damaged collagen. They may help reduce appearance of stretch marks. It has been seen that vitamin E in the form of oils is the most useful in treating stretch marks. Vitamin E helps in the production of collagen and is therefore recommended for those who suffer from stretch marks. Vitamin E oil or cod liver oil can be rubbed on the skin. A massage with these oils will give you quick results. You can even take vitamin E supplements orally. The best way to do this is to treat the marks as soon as they begin to appear.
Cocoa butter is also an effective remedy for stretch marks. Fortunately, cocoa butter is also great for dry skin and is therefore abundantly available in the form of moisturizers, lotions, and creams. This too can be massaged on to the skin that has stretch marks. Till date, laser surgeries have proved to be the most successful in the treatment of stretch marks. It is also a very expensive method and therefore not very popular. Laser surgeries are the only way to remove stretch marks permanently. In a laser surgery procedure, the skin’s damaged tissues are broken down completely and either removed or vaporized. This surgery consists of a series of treatments, and sometimes, this could be ineffective on some people. This is why, even though many people can afford such a surgery, they often do not opt for it.
