Sunburns are very common after a long summer. This is especially true for people who spend a lot of time at the beach or in the sun. Those who have fairer skins are especially prone to it.

Sun burns are of three types. First degree burns affect the upper layer of skin and turn it red or dark brown. There is a lot of pain in this kind of a sun burn. In second degree burns, the skin breaks out in water blisters. The skin is red and there is a lot of pain. The blisters can be small or big, depending upon the extent of sun damage. If the blisters are very large, medical helps should be sought immediately.

Third degree burns are characterized by patches of discolored skin. There is a lot of pain and swelling. These are extremely dangerous and should be dealt with very carefully. The presence of streaks, either red or white, warrants a visit to the emergency room. While third degree burns are best treated by doctors, first and second degree burns can be treated with suitable home remedies. The easiest thing to do in such a case is to apply a cold compress or an ice pack. However, never apply ice directly to sun burnt skin. Instead, wrap some ice in a clean towel and apply to the skin. Alternatively, you can take a cool shower. This will help soothe the burnt skin and relieve you of the pain and itching.

If you want to apply something on the burnt skin, make sure that you apply only water based products. Applying any oil based products will only make your burnt skin worse. The oil tends to clog the pores and increases the itching. It could also cause the skin to fester. You may draw yourself a cool bath by adding some vinegar to cool water. Cooked oatmeal can also be added to the bath to give relief from the painful blisters, and sun burns. Cook about 1.5 cups of oatmeal in water, and place it in a small porous bag. Immerse this bag in a warm bath and soak yourself in this water.

If the burnt area is itchy, clean it and apply some calamine lotion. This will temporarily take care of the burning and itching on the skin. Freshly brewed chamomile tea can also help soothe the itching. Brew a tea and soak a clean piece of cloth in it. Now place the cloth on the affected area and leave it there for some time.
