Mecca balsam The classical name is aromatic resinous juice is the Balsamodendron opobalsamum, now commonly called balm of Gilead. This balm of Gilead has also been used for the balsam fir and for a herbaceous aromatic, shrubby plant (Dracocephalum canariense or Cedronella canariensis) of the family. Labiatae, family of mint, native to the Canary Islands and is grown in parts of the United States.
