When the external ear canal becomes inflamed, this condition is known as the swimmer’s ear. The symptoms of this condition are many, including temporary loss of hearing, severe pain, heaviness in the ear, migraines, and itching. This condition occurs when water gets clogged in the ear and infection begins to fester.
Usually, you may start having the symptoms after taking a shower or swimming for a long period of time. If your hearing becomes fuzzy, this is a sure indication of water logging in your ear, and something must be done immediately to drain out the water. Clogged water in the ear may not immediately cause an infection. However, if it pains when you pull your ear and wiggle it a little, know that you have a swimmer’s ear. With time, a yellowish or whitish discharge may start flowing out of your ear. This is not a good thing and should be immediately shown to the doctor.
There are many home remedies available to treat a swimmer’s ear. However, prevention is the best remedy. To prevent your ears from becoming infected, always keep them dry. While swimming, always wear the correct gear. If you do not have swimming gear, apply some Vaseline on two cotton plugs and put them in your ear. You can use these plugs while showering too. The use of vinegar or rubbing alcohol is most popular for the treatment of swimmer’s ear. Daub a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and clean your ears with it. Alternatively, you may use a dropper to put a few drops of rubbing alcohol into your ear. The alcohol is germicidal and also helps in drying up any water that might be present inside the ear. If you do not have rubbing alcohol at hand, you may use a dropper to put in a few drops of a weak solution of apple cider vinegar and water. However, since water can help the bacteria to grow, it is best to use alcohol or vinegar mixed with alcohol.
If you still feel that your ear is clogged, use a hair dryer to dry out the excess water. Use the dryer at some distance from your ear. Make sure that the dryer is set to the “warm” option. The warm air will help dry the water that is clogged in the ear. If you have a severe bacterial or fungal infection in the ear, weak vinegar solution might not be able to help you. Use a dropper to put in a few drops of white vinegar in your ear. Repeat this every 2 to 3 hours.
