Stomach virus or stomach flu also known as viral gastroenteritis is the pathological state of the stomach caused by a range of viruses that induce nausea or looseness of the bowels or both. Even though it is sometimes referred to as "stomach flu," there is no connection to the influenza viruses. Many types of viruses can cause gastroenteritis, including reoviruses, winter vomiting virus, a group of viruses including those that in humans cause upper respiratory infection, sapoviruses and astroviruses.
Viral gastroenteritis is not caused due to bacteria (such as enteric bacteria or E. coli) or parasites (such as flagellate protozoan), or by medicines or other medical conditions, in spite of the fact that the symptoms between the two might be similar.
Your doctor would be the best judge to determine if the diarrhea is the result of a virus or something else. Individuals who have contracted viral gastroenteritis almost invariably recuperate entirely without any long-run complications. But the illness itself is a serious one as people afflicted with the stomach condition are unable to consume enough fluids to substitute what they have lost through nausea or watery bowel movements.
The most significant therapy or mode of treatment for a stomach virus ailment is to avoid the loss of fluids that can lead to dehydration with grave consequences. Dehydration has the potential of being a grievous condition, and hence it is important to keep consuming plenty of water. It is important to ensure that the diet comprises of soft and soup-based food along with plenty of water, and ensure that the individual receives a good deal of rest.
Another responsible thing to do is to consume such foods and liquids that are easily digestible. Keep away from citrus fruits and fatty foods. In addition, stay clear of milk products and any kind of carbonated beverages, alcoholic drinks, and coffee. It is important to maintain a diet that has simple carbohydrates. Not only are such simple foods necessary in helping you to regain your strength and energy, it will help in replenishing the lost nutrients. Some basic foods that can help in easing a gastrointestinal reaction include: bananas, whole meal toast, steamed or boiled mashed vegetables, soft mashed fruit etc.
Non-prescription medications must be avoided at all cost, especially antibiotics as they do not have any effect on virus. Unless your doctor specifically recommends medicines, do not self-prescribe. Moreover, your doctor may also offer precise instructions on the kinds of fluid you must have or stay away from. Some doctors prescribe the use of oral rehydration solution (ORS) when diarrhea takes place.
