white spots on tonsils? any home remedies?

Small spots located at the rear end of the throat are known as tonsils stones or Tonsilloliths. Food articles that are trapped in crypts on the surface of the tonsils are the primary cause of tonsils stones. The trapped particles are covered with mucus which later solidifies resulting in the hardened white stones on the tonsils. In most cases, tonsil stones disappear on their own without the need for any medication, as they are not related to any underlying medical condition. You can also use a cotton swab to remove the white spots on the tonsils. It is best to have the white spots removed as the hardened food and mucus can lead to halitosis or bad breath.

In stubborn cases, your doctor may have to get rid of it through a minor surgical procedure. Some surgical procedures can permanently smoothen the crevices on the tonsils that allow food articles to get accumulated on them; or alternatively remove the tonsils altogether. In any event, surgery is recommended only if there is no other alternative.

There are several home remedies that can be used to alleviate the symptoms caused by tonsilloliths. Gargling with salt water is a home remedy that is believed to be very effective in treating the condition as it cuts down the incidence of bacteria buildup in the tonsils and cleanses the region. The gargling must be ideally done early in the morning upon awakening. Gargling with freshly squeezed lemon juice can also help as effectively as a salt water gargle. A mixture prepared by boiling fenugreek seeds in water is known to be beneficial in treating irritated tonsils.

It is very important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially plenty of warm water, as this is necessary to keep the body hydrated without affecting any part of the body including the tonsils. Additional fluids such as herbal teas, fresh vegetable and fruit juices are ideally suited to refresh your system and enhance the healing process.

Sometimes you might find it difficult to swallow certain foods, due to the presence of the tonsil stones. Do remember to stay away from eating such solids or any other type of foods which may irritate the tonsils, till the stones are removed. Your regular solid meals can be replaced by softer meals like soups, porridges and fresh juices. Some experts believe that smoking can also lead to a higher incidence of tonsil stones; hence, it is a good idea to stop smoking, as this will reduce the irritation caused to the tonsils.

White spots on tonsils can be due to deposition of skin cells or inner mucosa, food material or bacteria in the crypts of tonsils (tonsils have pits or little craters). It could also be spots of pus accumulated on your tonsils.

  • Oral hygiene plays an important role in avoiding these white spots.
  • Milk has a soothing effect on the tonsillitis and turmeric acts as an antibiotic. Add ¼ tsp turmeric powder and a pinch of salt to hot milk and drink twice daily, every morning and night.
  • Make an herbal tea using ginger, mint leaves, tea leaves, holy basil, pepper and honey. Drinking just an ounce of this tea will help to soothe your tonsillitis.
  • Avoid sour, spicy, oily/fried foods, cold water/cold foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol or cigarette as they further tend to irritate the throat. Instead have hot vegetable soup or broths to soothe your throat.

If you see small white stones on the tonsils or feel pain then it is advisable to consult a specialist as soon as possible.
