Feeling nauseated and vomiting during pregnancy is called morning sickness. It occurs more often after rising than later in the day. It is quite common in the first half of pregnancy.

However, for few, it can persist for four to five months. Feeling sick at the smell of certain food or cigarette smoke is common. This can occur due to hormonal changes in the body as well as it can be psychological due to the tensions and anxieties relating to pregnancy.

Most cases of nausea and vomiting aren’t harmful to the mother and the unborn child and it decreases at some point during the day. If excessive, persistent and prolonged vomiting is seen, then the doctor may hospitalize the patient and feed her intravenously to prevent dehydration and any complications.

Simple home remedies for avoiding nausea:-

  • In the morning, do not get up suddenly from the bed. Take your time. If you feel sick in the morning, eat a little, preferably a couple of plain biscuits, dry crackers, toasted bread or Rusk, before getting up from the bed.
  • Do not avoid meals due to the fear of vomiting. Have frequent and small meals at an interval of 2 hours.
  • Have more of vegetable salads and fruits as this can add fluid to your body and can avoid dehydration due to vomiting.
  • Ginger tea or ginger tablets are beneficial during this condition.
  • Avoid fatty or fried and spicy foods.
  • Drink a lot of fluids, preferably 10 -12 glasses in the form of water or juices or broth. Herbal tea can also help in relieving nausea. Liquids taken in between meals rather than with meals are effective.
  • Take adequate rest and avoid heavy exertion during the day because if you are tired, you may feel more nauseated.
  • Plenty of fresh air and light exercise like walking can be helpful.
  • Move around the house slowly and take breaks in between. Avoid jerky movements.
  • Before going to bed at night, have a light snack like bread or cereal or have a glass of milk.

If vomiting still persists till the verge of losing your weight, then it is advisable to consult the doctor.
