remedies for high blood pressure
( 6 Sep 2007)

It is very important to keep your blood pressure in control and to avoid any complications related to it. A low sodium and high potassium diet is prescribed for high blood pressure. Follow these simple diet and lifestyle modifications at home to have control over your pressure.

  • Watch your weight, if you are above your ideal body weight try to lose the excess.
  • Cut down on visible salt, and also foods high in sodium such as processed foods, pickles, ketchup, canned foods, salted peanuts or cashew nuts, wafers or chips. Minimize salt intake in food and foods rich in sodium; instead include whole wheat and its products, lots of fresh fruits and dark green leafy vegetables in your diet.
  • Always make a habit to read the food label for sodium and potassium content.  Avoid canned/bottled foods, processed foods, junk foods, ketchups, pickles, smoked meat, salted sausages/pork, salted popcorn/chips/nuts and ready to eat foods.
  • Completely avoid tobacco and alcohol. Mild exercise like walking will also help to control your blood pressure.
