Home remedies for restless legs

Any natural aides I can use for Restless Legs?
( 2 Sep 2007)

Restless legs syndrome or RLS is characterized by a strong urge to keep moving the legs, in order to stop experiencing uncomfortable sensations. It is most common in the legs, but may sometimes also affect the torso and arms. There is an uncomfortable feeling in the legs while sleeping or sitting.

It may be described as a burning or tingling sensation. Moving the legs brings relief temporarily. Activities such as travelling on long journeys can become extremely uncomfortable. Sleep may also be affected due to this condition. The symptoms may become aggravated at night. RLS can occur at any age, but generally develops in older individuals.

The cause of RLS is unknown, although research suggests that it could be due to disruptions in the level of the chemical dopamine, which is responsible for muscle movements. RLS also tends to run in families. This is especially the case when it develops at early ages. It is seen that stress tends to aggravate the symptoms. Hormonal fluctuations could also contribute to greater discomfort due to RLS. Pregnancy involves many hormonal changes, and RLS could first appear during this time. The symptoms tend to disappear after the delivery. RLS may also accompany other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, in which the nerves of the hands and legs become damaged. Iron deficiency in the blood and kidney failure could also result in RLS.

Some natural ways by which you can obtain relief from RLS is taking a warm bath or massaging the legs. These will help to relax the muscles and alleviate the discomfort. Hot and cold compresses also reduce the uncomfortable sensations in the legs that result from RLS. Changes in temperature are also known to bring relief to those suffering from RLS. You can use hot compresses or dip the feet in warm water, during winters. In summers, you can place cold cloths over the legs or use ice compresses. Since stress can trigger worsening of the symptoms, it is important to keep stress at bay through meditation and relaxation techniques. You also need to get adequate sleep and maintain a proper sleeping environment. Ensure that the place in which you sleep is quiet and comfortable. Sleeping and waking at fixed timings will also ensure that you get a proper amount of sleep. Moderate exercise may also bring relief from the symptoms. Taking a walk regularly will help to keep the muscles from tightening. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine as these tend to worsen RLS. Eat healthy as nutritional deficiencies may also lead to RLS.
