Dark circles are blemishes that occur around the eyes, and are characterized by areas of skin discoloration just beneath the eyes. They are also commonly called bags under the eyes and are usually caused by other conditions or illnesses. Tiredness, allergic reactions and hereditary are some of the common causes of under eye dark circles.

It has been seen that dark circles under the eyes tend to be a trait that is inherited. So it is likely that other family members may also have this condition. It occurs as a result of increased transparency of the skin. The under eye area has very thin skin, and as such, the blood flowing through the veins just beneath the skin’s surface, is visible as areas that are bluish in color. Lack of proper sleep, irregular sleeping patterns and tiredness could make the skin pale, thereby making the veins beneath more visible. Dark circles could also result due to exposure to the sun. The areas under the eye are also prone to pigmentation due to sun exposure, just as the rest of the skin is. Eye infections that cause itching can also result in dark circles. Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is known to cause under eye dark circles, especially when the allergy is at its peak. Medications may also contribute to this condition, especially those medications that cause dilation of the blood vessels. The skin under the eyes being very thin, the blood beneath is visible in the form of darkened areas. Improper nutrition could also cause this condition. As one ages, the dark circles become more emphasized. Also, folds and wrinkles tend to develop under the eyes, which make the dark circles quite prominent.

Home remedies to get rid of dark circles are many and quite easy to use. A paste of lemon juice, tomato juice, gram flour and turmeric powder may be applied to the dark circles. All these ingredients tend to have a bleaching effect on the skin, which will help to lighten the under eye areas. Slices of cucumber or raw potato may be placed on puffy eyes to reduce tiredness. Consuming tomato juice is also beneficial in reducing dark circles. You may add a few drops of lemon juice, some mint leaves and a pinch of salt to it. Protect the eyes from exposure to the sun by wearing sunglasses when stepping out. Massaging the area gently with almond oil is also known to be effective. Vitamin E is also good for getting rid of skin discolorations under the eyes. A very effective and soothing remedy for under eye dark circles is to place cotton balls soaked in rose water over the eyes. In addition, getting an adequate amount of sleep and maintaining a proper sleeping routine is essential for preventing dark circles under the eyes.
