Natural treatment for bladder infection

Do you have a home remedy for a bladder infection?
( 2 Sep 2007)

Bladder infections are caused by bacteria that enter the urinary tract through the urethra and are more commonly referred to as urinary tract infections or UTIs. The bacteria immediately start multiplying in the bladder, causing the infection that typically results in irritation and pain, especially while urinating. A burning sensation while urinating, traces of blood in the urine, cloudy appearance of urine, strong odor emitted by the urine, pressure on the lower abdomen, increase in the frequency of the urge to urinate and a low-grade fever are all symptoms of bladder infections.

Infections in the prostrate gland and the vagina are known to aggravate the condition and can be transmitted during intercourse. Kidney stones, chemotherapy and radiation also contribute to bladder infections. Urinary tract infections affect the healthy balance of the body and may lead to serious and irreversible kidney and bladder complications, if not attended to in time. In some cases, they can be a symptom of an underlying complication. Hence, consulting a doctor is recommended if the discomfort persists.

Bladder infections can be treated effectively with proper care, basic personal hygiene and diet. The best known remedy for bladder infections is increasing your intake of fluids, especially water. Fresh fruit juices are also recommended. This brings immediate relief, reducing the pain and discomfort, to a large extent, by flushing out the bacteria and preventing the further spread of the infection. It also strengthens the immune system which is essential for fighting off the bacterial infection. Cranberry juice is also thought to be effective in dislodging bacteria from the bladder walls. At the same time, carbonated drinks, dairy products, artificial sweeteners, cheese, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco should be avoided, as they usually seem to aggravate bladder infections. Yogurt is known for its ability to fight bacterial infections and hence, increasing the intake of yogurt may also reduce the infection. Apple cider vinegar is also known for its ability to fight bacteria, and soaking in a tub of warm water to which apple cider vinegar has been added, may help to reduce the irritation and burning sensation caused by the bacteria.

Relieving yourself as often as possible is recommended to get rid of the bacteria from the urinary tract, and prevents the retention of urine and bacteria in the body. Since the bacteria multiply at a great speed, holding back urine can increase the infection, leading to further inflammation and irritation in the urinary tract. As far as possible, avoid using public toilets as they are often the source of bacterial infections.
