An eye stye is formed when a sebaceous gland near the eyelid is infected. It usually forms when a follicle of an eyelash is blocked and subsequently becomes infected. A stye results in a swelling of the affected eyelid, which will lead to a disturbance in complete vision of the affected eye, until the infection clears up.
Styes are not permanently harmful to vision, but they can be quite a nuisance and extremely painful, especially when touched. The usual indications of a stye include redness, pain and watering of the eye that is infected. Styes are not contagious, and usually disappear on their own or with some simple home remedies, but if they do not heal for up to three or four weeks, surgical draining may be needed.
Placing a warm compress pad over the affected eyelid for about fifteen minutes and then gently massaging the eyelid will help to drain out the pus from the stye. Other home remedies include placing the pulpy side of a slit aloe vera leaf on the affected eyelid. Aloe Vera, known for its medicinal value, will help in clearing out the infection from the eyelid and reducing discomfort by its soothing nature. The leaves of the guava plant, when warmed and placed on a warm damp cloth which is applied to the eye, will also reduce the swelling and redness from the eye that is affected. A solution of alum can also be used as an eye wash to clear out the underlying bacteria from the eyelid, thereby relieving you of discomfort. Another well recommended home remedy to treat a stye is placing a wet tea bag over the infected eyelid to remove the pus and bacteria that have given rise to the stye. Any tea bag can be used for this purpose.
The most important factor in protecting yourself against developing an eye stye is to wash your hands before touching the skin around the eyelids. The bacteria on the hands is easily transferred to the eye, and can then cause an infection of the eyelash follicles. Other reasons for the formation of styes include wearing contact lenses through the night, sharing eyeliners and other products that are in close contact with the eyes. Such habits should therefore be avoided. Another precaution is to wear protective goggles while swimming, to prevent a stye caused by bacteria present in the water. While gardening and cooking too, you should always wash your hands before touching your eyes to prevent bacteria from causing a stye.
