Hemorrhoids, more commonly known as ‘piles’, is caused when the veins and nerves lying in the rectum and anus get swollen and inflamed due to frequent straining. A number of causes have been attributed to hemorrhoids, among the most common of them being chronic constipation, sitting for long periods of time, and hypertension. A strain on the bowels could be caused by constipation due to water retention, and by diarrhea too.

Obesity is another cause of hemorrhoids because of the intense pressure that is placed on the rectal veins.

There are a number of easy to follow remedies that have been suggested to cure piles. Being caused by constipation, the priority of course lies in regulating bowel movements that will help avoid the occurrence of piles. To do this, one must make an alteration in the diet and increase the amount of fruits and vegetables being consumed. These foods are rich in fibers and roughage, thereby leading to a softening of the stool. Most often, piles in the initial stages will settle down because of this change made in the dietary pattern. Drinking plenty of water is recommended as this too helps to have a healthy and regular stool. Buttermilk, made from cow’s milk, with peppercorns, rock salt and ginger is also said to be effective in treating piles by reducing the pain. Bleeding piles can be taken care of by a fine powder of black mustard in goat’s milk with a little sugar, taken early in the morning. A short term remedy for treating piles that causes excruciating pain is the application of a little coconut oil around the part that is affected. This brings quick relief, but is of course not a permanent solution to the problem. Dry figs are one of the most highly recommended measures that can be taken to cure piles. The general recommendation is that the figs should be allowed to soak in water overnight. Once this has been done, they should be consumed early in the morning, along with the water in which they have soaked. Wheat grass has also proved to be extremely beneficial in treating piles, and is sometimes used as an enema, however, this should only be done by a medical professional, and only if really necessary.

Exercise plays an important part in treating piles, because anyone who undergoes any form of physical activity will make use of the abdominal muscles, at some point of time. This activity in the abdominal region will improve the circulation of blood in the rectal muscles.
