People suffering from jaundice experience a yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes, accompanied by nausea at the smell of food. A person afflicted with jaundice is essentially facing a malfunctioning of the liver, which normally causes bile salts to be released into the intestine to aid digestion. Due to the malfunction, these bile salts, especially bilirubin, mix with the blood in unusually large quantities to produce the yellow discoloration of the skin.
Jaundice itself is not a disease, but is suggestive of a number of underlying illnesses. An inflammation of the liver and gallstones are the main causes of jaundice, but there are numerous other conditions that can lead to the same symptom.
Jaundice can be treated in many ways, but the most important thing to keep in mind is the fact that a lot of rest has to be undertaken till the acute symptoms of the infection have subsided. Extreme fatigue and weakness are known effects of jaundice. Fruits have been well recommended in treating a person with jaundice, because there is no oil in fruit which would cause an aggravation of the illness. Besides, fruit juices contain a lot of the nutrition required for the body to strengthen itself and fight the disease. A little moderate exercise is also advised, but any strenuous activity will be harmful. An increase in the intake of fresh vegetables is also known to help in treating jaundice. Another common means of treating jaundice is through barley water, which should be taken six or seven times a day. While keeping your diet in check, it is also necessary to ensure that the fruits and vegetables that you eat are cleaned or cooked properly. Food that is rich in oil, junk food and food bought from eateries should be avoided. Spicy foods and foods that are difficult to digest are not helpful and will hamper your progress back to good health. Mental, physical and emotional stress aggravates the condition and proper rest will help to overcome the illness. Fatty sources of protein such as organ meat, shell fish, poultry and meat with skin should be avoided as they could be difficult to digest.
Changing your eating habits is not only important while you are ill, but should be continued for a while even after you feel better, so that your body gets a chance to recover completely and healthily. For this reason, oily foods and strenuous activities should be avoided for a couple of months, as a precautionary measure against a relapse.
