Information on piles
Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, is a medical condition in which the tissues in the anus become swollen and painful due to a variety of reasons. The basic cause of this is excessive pressure on the veins in this area over a long period of time. This can be the result of frequent straining during excretion due to constipation or diarrhea, or the result of some other illness such as hypertension. Obesity and pregnancy can also result in stress to the veins in the anal area.
There are no real complications with hemorrhoids as far as secondary conditions or diseases are concerned, except for gangrene in very rare cases. Cancer is not associated with hemorrhoids, except that a tumor may sometimes be the underlying cause of the condition. Pain and itching are common symptoms, but in some cases, bleeding also occurs. In addition, hemorrhoids sometimes prolapse — an internal hemorrhoid may get pushed out of the anal canal and be seen or felt outside the anus. Sometimes a prolapsed hemorrhoid may retract on its own, while others may need to be pushed back in. In such a case, prompt medical attention is necessary, or else the blood vessels and tissue can die due to the cutting off of blood supply, and subsequently gangrene can set in.
