Question on lactation

lactation
( 2 Sep 2007)

What is lactation is not a very commonly asked question as by the time an individual grows into a young adult, he or she generally has an idea of the biological process. The causes of lactation are primarily limited to the process of childbirth and makes up the most effective method of feeding a newborn. Lactation is essentially the filling up of a woman’s breast in order to nurse the baby.

There are a few lactation foods that will help boost the quality of breast milk being fed to the child in order to ensure that the baby gets its fair share of nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

Because of the fact that the mother is consuming foods for her as well as the baby, it is important to make sure that she follows a well balanced diet. There are also a few foods that are known to promote breast milk production – thereby allowing the child to have a longer and more nutritious feed. Some of these lactation foods include sweet potato, carrot, black sesame seeds, asparagus and fennel amongst many others. Adding about 3 to 4 glasses of milk to your diet everyday is also known to play a huge role in promoting lactation in the female body.

Reasons for lacting without pregnancy?

The breasts of a woman develop during puberty. Their main function is the production of milk that will nourish a new born baby. The breasts also serve secondary functions associated with the appearance of the individual as well as her sexual response. Lactation is triggered by hormones produced in the woman’s body when she is pregnant and in the period after this. These hormones are also produced through stimulation of the breasts, something that a new born baby will instinctively do. Non pregnancy lactation is something that may happen fairly often. This is a condition where the woman may experience lactation without pregnancy where the breasts may leak a few drops of milk.

The breasts may also feel heavy and tender at this stage. This may happen as a result of stimulation of the breasts by the woman’s partner. It is also possible that some hormonal imbalance in the woman’s body is triggering the production of milk. Non pregnancy lactation can be quite uncomfortable for the woman while also disturbing her daily routine. If there is no obvious reason for this, the woman should visit her doctor to get tested to check why she is lactating. This type of lactation is almost always limited to extremely small quantities of milk.

Can lactation be an early sign of pregnancy?

Because of the fact that lactation is a biological process in the body that is strongly linked with childbirth, lactation is considered to be one of the most common early symptoms of pregnancy. However, it is important to remember that lactation before pregnancy is not uncommon as there are a number of women all over the world that are known to start leaking well before they are pregnant. As a result, it is important to check with your doctor or even a home pregnancy kit to make sure that you confirm the pregnancy as pregnancy and lactation are not necessarily linked. More pertinent to symptoms of pregnancy will be changes in the body and the tendering of the breast – which will generally precede the lactation development in expecting mothers.

In the event that you are confirmed to be pregnant, it is important to make sure that you boost the body’s ability to lactate. There are a variety of foods that are known to help boost milk production in the body such as asparagus and black sesame seeds. Drinking some milk in the morning and before sleeping as it is known to be extremely effective. There is a lot of reading material that is available through the internet as well as your local bookstore that will help you prepare for the changes that you body will experience during this process.

Is it possible to get pregnant while breast feeding?

Pregnancy occurs when sperm from the male partner interact and fertilize an egg from the woman’s body. One must therefore engage in unprotected sexual intercourse for this to happen. Under normal circumstances, the woman’s body will produce one mature egg during each menstrual cycle. In the middle of this cycle, the woman is said to be most fertile and, therefore, most likely to conceive if she is engaging in intercourse. Many doctors define pregnancy only when the fertilized egg has implanted itself in the wall of the uterus.

During pregnancy and after child birth, the woman’s body prevents menstruation through various hormonal changes that take place. Even so, it is possible to be getting pregnant while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding may last for many months into the infant’s life. Meanwhile, the mother’s body functions associated with menstruation and ovulation may begin to normalize themselves once again. When this happens, the woman will be ready to conceive again. Therefore, partners who do not want another baby must engage in protected sex after delivery of the baby. This is because the link between breastfeeding and fertility is different in each individual. This will ensure that any unwanted pregnancy is avoided. At this stage, the woman’s body may be in a fragile state, particularly her uterus immediately after child birth.
