Anal fissures are described as a tear in the lining of the lower rectum, known as the anus, which results in pain during the passing of stools. It is considered to be a common disorder and generally does not lead to any serious complications. The majority of anal fissures heal with the use of natural home treatments in a few days or weeks.
These fissures affect almost everyone regardless of age and gender, although it does seem to have an affinity to younger children and people.
However, those anal fissures which have not healed after six weeks are considered to be a chronic condition. It is highly advisable to seek immediate medical assistance as your doctor would be in the best position to diagnose your exact condition and prescribe appropriate medication. In rare cases, surgery may be required to resolve fissures that cannot be healed with medicine.
Anal fissures are primarily caused due to certain trauma experienced by the anal canal. The trauma can occur due to the passing of abnormally large tools that stretch the anal canal. It can also be brought on by a bout of constipation due to which hard stools may try to pass through the anal canal. Diarrhea can also be responsible for irritating the sensitive anus. Childbirth has also been known to cause injury to the anal canal. During the process of childbirth, some women tend to develop anal fissures. Recent research has shown that since many people experience constipation as well as diarrhea without suffering from anal fissures, there may be other factors responsible for causing them. There are cases where anal fissures are caused by Crohn’s disease which is an inflammatory bowel disease which leads to bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and fissures near the anus.
You can use some natural home treatments to seek relief from the symptoms of anal fissures. Some of these include soaking in a shallow vessel of warm water thrice daily, increasing your intake of foods with high content of fiber and consuming laxatives. Most people experience relief within a couple of days of home treatment. It is important to bear in mind that although the pain may disappear, it may yet take a few weeks for the fissures to heal totally. In rare cases, fissures have been known to heal without any treatment. As far as possible, you should try to avoid constipation as this can hinder the healing process. Ensure that you drink plenty of water and other liquids as this will help in softening the stools and thereby enabling it to pass smoothly.
