Question on psoriasis

psoriasis
(30 Aug 2007)

Psoriasis is one of the most common skin conditions all over the world and although it is more commonly considered to be linked to the aging of the person it affects, the condition can start to develop in people of relatively young age as well, with some known cases showing the roots start to develop in individuals that are as young as about 15 years of age. Psoriasis is a condition that stems from the system that handles the renewal of skin cells all across the body. Before getting into the details of ‘what is psoriasis?

’, it helps to know a little more about the renewal process of skin cells in the human body. Through natural occurrences, the skin cells all over our body are shed and new ones take their place on a regular basis. However, when an individual is affected by psoriasis, there is some sort of miscommunication that takes place between the systems that are responsible for handling these changes in our body. The immune system will ensure that the replacement cells are created, however, the old cells are not shed, thereby causing a buildup of skin cells in the areas where the condition is most prominent.
Psoriasis causes are primarily genetic with the condition being handed down from generation to generation within the same bloodline. There are different types of psoriasis that can all be differentiated by the kind of patterns the skin cells form. The five primary types of psoriasis skin disease are – plaque, guttate, inverse, erythrodermic and pustular. The most common condition that is known to affect about 80% of all patients is known as plaque and is characterized by the development of patches of skin, with the most commonly affected areas being the knee caps, the elbows and other joints.

One of the most common rumors about psoriasis causes and treatments is that the condition is contagious. However, the condition is not contagious in any form and cannot be transmitted through touch or sharing of one’s personal items. For people that develop psoriasis without having any family medical history of the same, scientists are still researching the factors that could influence the body to start generating new skin cells in a matter of days rather than weeks. Despite the various theories of psoriasis causes in children and adults, the symptoms of the condition are known to become more prominent during the winter months. Patients are also known to report improvements in the condition during the warmer, summer months.

Because of the fact that the condition is a rather common one, there are a number of psoriasis treatment options as well as more information on psoriasis causes and cures that can be found through a number of sources such as the internet as well as the health and living section of your local book store. A bath containing hot Epsom salts is considered to be a very effective method of dealing with psoriasis and is known to help soother especially painful instances of inflammation of the condition. Cabbage leaves used to create a compress is another very widely used option when it comes to psoriasis treatment and can be applied on the area of skin after having removed the thick veins of the leaves. A mixture of wheat germ oil and castor oil in proportions of about a single teaspoon each and adding an additional cup of sunflower oil will serve to be a very effective lotion to apply on the affected area of the skin. Another aspect of psoriasis causes and cures that is regularly overlooked is the fact that exercise plays a very important role in ensuring that the condition is kept in check at most times.
