Yeast infections of the vagina are considered to be a dermal condition commonly noticed in women. It is a condition that affects women regardless of age. Yeast infections can be quite an irritating skin condition which leads to significant discomfort and painful bruises.
These infections, which are medically referred to as vaginal Candidiasis, are primarily caused by an increase in the amount of a fungus, known as Candida albicans. Moisture is ideally suited for the growth of this kind of yeast and therefore it is the generally found in great abundance in places in the body that tend to be sweaty or moist throughout the day. This condition is also sometimes known as vaginitis which is caused by the localized decrease of specific bacteria commonly referred to as lactobacillus acidophilus. These bacteria inhibit the production of harmful fungus and yeast. Yeast infections can also be brought upon by medication abuse, excessive use of antibiotics, and usage of perfumed vaginal sprays. Some women who undergo chemotherapy are also affected by yeast conditions.
It is extremely important to note that vaginal yeast infections are not sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Recurrences, however, are very common. This condition can be identified by symptoms such as burning soreness and itching in the vaginal area, appearance of rashes and unpleasant scald marks. It is also usually accompanied by a whitish discharge with a granular texture or the appearance of moldy white sediment on the vaginal walls.
Fortunately there are some natural home remedies that can be used to gain relief from the symptoms of a yeast infection. Yogurt is considered to be an extremely effective remedy for this yeast. This tasty, unsweetened food is an excellent source of lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria which are useful in inhibiting the growth of the yeast. Ideally it is best to consume yoghurt daily, but some folk therapists recommend the topical application of yoghurt on the area. Yoghurt is directly applied on the moldy sediment with the help of a tampon or disinfected cotton swab and left undisturbed for a couple of hours for best results.
Garlic is also believed to be quite efficient in the treatment of vaginitis because it is useful in killing the Candida fungus and is also gentle on the skin. It is also effective in dehydrating the affected area, absorbing the excess moisture thereby arresting the growth of the yeast. Some folk remedies call for the insertion cloves or strips of garlic into the vaginal cavity. Regular usage of such application is considered to be an effective home remedy in eliminating the rashes. Another alternative remedy is to make use of a solution made from a blend of apple cider vinegar and lukewarm water to be applied to the affected areas. Vinegar is considered to be beneficial in preventing the spread of the yeast and soothing the infected area.

Yeast infection is also referred to as Candida and the infection caused by Candida is known as Candidiasis. These infections caused by Candida are spawned by a group of microscopic fungi or yeast. There are more than 20 species of Candida that cause yeast infections in humans. Yeast infections can take place anywhere in the body particularly where there are folds of skin that are susceptible to dampness and moisture such as under the breast, around the vagina and the lower abdomen, nail beds etc. Yeast infections are known to get more common as age increases, but can strike humans at any age, especially among women. Some of the common remedies in fighting yeast infections include:
- Curdled milk - The beneficial bacteria in plain curdled milk or yogurt without any flavoring is useful in fighting yeast infections. Curdled milk is believed to be effective for use, both as an external application and internal consumption. However, only plain unsweetened yogurt is recommended as sweetened yoghurt may do more harm than good. Sugar is known to feed yeast and hence homemade yogurt is a superior option as it provides proactive bacteria that aids in fighting off the yeast conditions. As an external application, some women find relief from Candida by using a tampon that has been dipped in curdled milk. Application of Yogurt to the affected areas too can help to reduce the infection.
- Garlic is a known potent fighter against any form of yeast conditions. One of the most effective home remedies, garlic is believed to provide instant relief from the uncomfortable effects of yeast conditions. Daily consumption of garlic in the form of a whole garlic clove washed down with a glass of water brings about effective results. Garlic also helps in lowering hypertension and reducing bad cholesterol and among its other health benefits it is also a natural antibiotic.
- Apple-cider vinegar - is a popular home remedy, as an external application, against yeast conditions, but since it is very strong in its concentrated form, care must be taken during application. It is not recommended to use apple cider vinegar directly as an external application. A diluted solution in water can be used as a douche for vaginal yeast conditions or as an oral mouth wash. In addition to this, adding approximately a cup of the cider vinegar in your bathwater during a bath or in your tub – for a soak, can be of immense help in reducing discomfort. Do not use any other type of vinegar as they are produced chemically and can be extremely harsh and may cause more harm than good.
