mosquito bites/itch
(30 Aug 2007)

To begin with, a mosquito bite treatment requires that you wash the affected areas with soap and water in order to prevent the development of any infection as well as to reduce the amount of itchiness. It has been recommended to apply soap directly to the area affected by the bite as it acts as an itch remover. Make sure that you avoid rubbing the affected area.

Rubbing or scratching the area affected by a mosquito bite will actually aggravate the itchiness instead of alleviating it. It is also possible that you may expose the open area to dirt and bacteria leading to an infection. You can also use a cold compress on the affected area to gain relief from the itching, swelling and redness. You can make one by applying a pack of ice wrapped in a towel or by soaking a wash cloth in chilled water and placing it on the bite.

If the affected area turns red, and become swollen, and if it feels warm to the touch, there may be a possibility that the bite has become infected. If the condition persists and you begin to display symptoms such as headaches, fever, vomiting, chills or muscle aches, it is important that you seek immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, regardless of the annoyance caused by their bites, mosquitoes are also responsible for carrying various diseases, which they pickup and pass them from individual to individual. Encephalitis is one of the commonly experienced ailments brought on by mosquito bites.

There are several natural home remedies that can be used to alleviate the symptoms of a mosquito bite. You can begin by applying a paste made from baking soda with warm water. Apply this paste on the affected area to obtain relief from the itchiness. You can even use calamine lotion or a topical antiseptic cream to get relief from the itching and pain. Aloe Vera gel is considered to be very effective in treating mosquito bites. It is a natural compound which acts by reducing the swelling as well as the itching thereby soothing the skin. It is believed that the itchiness can also be relieved by the application of one percent hydrocortisone cream. If you have experienced numerous mosquito bites and are developing allergic reactions to them, consult a doctor who may prescribe antihistamines. Antihistamines are useful in alleviating the itchiness as well as the swelling. Sometimes doctors also recommend anti-inflammatory medications to gain relief from the swelling and the pain. Do bear in mind that it is always advisable to consult with your doctor before you consider self treatment.
