(27 Aug 2007)

Chicken pox is a contagious disease, which is caused by the infection of a virus, varicella zoster virus (VZV). The disease first appears as a vesicular skin rash on your head or body and it then spreads on your hands and feet, with the rashes transforming into itchy raw pockmarks.
As the disease in communicable, it is easily transmittable through respiratory secretions or by direct contact with the infected individual.

The incubation period for the ailment varies from ten to twenty one days.

The primary feature of the ailment is the appearance of the characteristic blisters or rashes on the skin. The other symptoms of the affliction are fever, dehydration, and nausea.

The pathology of the disease is as follows:
  • The disease is caused by an inhalation of infected droplets of respiratory fluids. After the inhalation of VZV, the latter infects the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract.
  • The virus replicates in the regional lymph nodes of the upper respiratory tract for a span of two to four days.
  • he initial infection is followed by primary viremia (entry of virus in the blood stream) lasting for a span of four to six days.
  • The second round of viral infections occurs in the internal organs of the body including liver and spleen.
  • The secondary round of VZV infection is flowed by a secondary viremia spread across a span of fourteen to sixteen days.

As such, the disease takes at least a span of three weeks to spread in the whole body. You must begin the treatment of the disease as soon as the ailment is diagnosed. Some of the natural remedies to cure the affliction are as follows:
  • You must try to lower the temperature of the body as chicken pox is characterized by high fever. Frequent baths or cold sponges will help to lower high body temperatures.
  • The rashes and blisters are extremely itchy. Resist the urge to itch them and prepare a bath made of oatmeal to relieve the itching sensation.
  • You may use lacto calamine lotion to alleviate the rashes and soothe the skin.
  • You may use green pea water to the relieve irritation of skin.
  • You may use honey as an emollient to relieve skin rashes.
  • Consume a soup of carrot and coriander to alleviate the symptoms of the ailment.
You may follow these remedies to treat the disease in addition to the conventional medical treatment prescribed by your doctor, but as the life cycle of the disease virus is three weeks, it is difficult to cure the disease in less than three weeks.
