Skin rashes are very common afflictions affecting millions of men, women and children around the world. Not only are they unsightly and embarrassing, but can also lead to a lot of discomfort, as they could cause pain, swelling, inflammation, redness and itching. There could be several factors that cause this problem, but most people suffer from rashes due to allergies.
When an allergy occurs, the body reacts in a hypersensitive manner, after being exposed to certain triggers, which could include food, drugs, airborne allergens and chemicals. While people can suffer from a rash caused by allergies after exposure to any of the triggers, food allergies are probably the most common in both adults and children. This is probably why there are several people who consult medical health care providers for information on food allergy relief. However, in order to prevent these food allergy rashes from cropping up again, it is important to identify what foods are causing the problem and then avoid them in the future.
Signs and Symptoms of Food Allergy
In some people, the signs and symptoms of food allergy are fairly mild, as they are restricted to a rash and swelling. However, in others, food allergies can trigger off such severe reactions, they may even be life threatening. Hives are a type of rash that could affect the individual when they consume allergic foods. The other signs and symptoms that would manifest themselves are itchiness or a tingling sensation in the mouth, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, and face, nausea and vomiting accompanied with pain in the stomach as also diarrhea. Besides this one may also experience nasal congestion accompanied by wheezing and/or breathing difficulties. Lightheadedness and dizziness may also point out to certain food allergies.
It could take anywhere between a few minutes and a couple of hours for the symptoms to crop up. In case any of the life threatening symptoms like rapid pulse, drop in blood pressure, constriction of the airways and loss of consciousness are seen, it is important to seek emergency medical attention.
Most Common Food Allergies
While each individual is different and can have an allergic reaction to any food item, there are certain types of foods that are regarded as being the drivers for the most common food allergies in America. Given below are some of the most common food allergies in adults and children:
- Shellfish, like crab, lobster and shrimp
- Eggs
- Certain tree nuts like pecans and walnuts
- Fish
- Peanuts
- Wheat
- Milk and other dairy products
- Strawberries
Many parents believe that that the most common food allergies in children are caused by chocolate. However, studies indicate that chocolate is rarely the trigger for a food allergy.
Food Allergy Rash Treatment
In order to avoid any rashes due to allergies, people are advised to avoid the foods they are allergic too. For minor allergic reactions there are many over the counter medicines that are easily available. These drugs help relieve rashes, hives and itchiness. One of the most effective home remedies that is known to bring about food allergy relief is the application of ice.
However, in case of a major allergic reaction, where the symptoms are a bit more severe, it may be necessary to undergo proper treatment, such as an epinephrine injection. There are a few people who are more prone to food allergies that the others. In such cases, health experts advise them to carry an auto-injector, with a dose of epinephrine with them, wherever they go.
Food allergies can be quite challenging, as there is no cure for them. Hence, the best course of action is to identify the food that have an adverse effect on the body and then avoid them completely. Food allergy rash treatment is therefore only possible when one is able to correctly identify the cause of the allergy.
