Home Remedies for Wheezing

Immediate relief for wheezing
( 6 Apr 2011)

Wheezing can be described as a high pitched, whistling sound that is heard when a person is breathing out or exhaling. Several adults and children experience this problem quite regularly. This high pitched sound is generally heard when a person tries to breathe through airways that have been narrowed, for any reason.

Contrary to what many people believe, wheezing is not a condition on its own; instead it is an indication of certain respiratory problems, especially lung disorders in both adults and children. There could be several different causes of wheezing in people and some of them could be quite serious. Therefore, when a person experiences wheezing on a regular basis, it is important for them to visit a doctor and undergo a few tests, to determine the exact cause of the problem.

Causes of Wheezing

Asthma is one of the most common causes of wheezing in people of all ages. However, there could be several other causes of wheezing other than asthma. Given below are some of the other possible causes of wheezing in adults and children:
  • Smoking or excessive exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Inflammation or infection in the respiratory tract
  • Pneumonia
  • Use of certain medication
  • Sleep apnea
  • Lung problems (especially cancer)
  • GERD
  • COPD
  • Bronchitis
  • Physical obstruction in the respiratory tract
  • Tumors
At times, wheezing could also be aggravated by eating foods that are heavy, greasy or spicy. Allergic reactions have also been known to trigger off wheezing problems in many children and in some cases, adults too. One of the most effective ways of identifying the different causes this problem is by observing the different symptoms of wheezing.

Symptoms of Wheezing

Wheezing, on its own, can be regarded as a symptom of certain underlying conditions. However, at times, there are other symptoms too, that may accompany this problem, which could include:
  • Excess production of mucus
  • Difficulty in breathing, especially while exhaling
  • Tightening sensation in the chest
  • High fever, in case the condition is serious
There are some symptoms that require immediate medical attention, when they accompany wheezing. It is absolutely essential to seek emergency help in case any of these symptoms are evident:
  • Changes in the color of the skin, taking on a bluish tint
  • Altered mental states
  • Swelling or hives on the face and throat
  • Labored breathing, to the point of feeling suffocated
When people experience this problem on a regular basis it is best for them to seek professional help for relief from this condition, as soon as possible.

Relief for Wheezing

The treatment of wheezing will vary, based on the symptoms that are experienced, as well as the cause of the problem. However, most people prefer to choose a natural cure for wheezing, as they are believed to have fewer side effects, as compared to traditional medication. Given below are some of the most commonly recommended home remedies for wheezing in adults and children:
  • Breathe in air, to which moisturize, has been added, either with the help of a vaporizer, or by running hot steamy water in the bathroom, with the door closed
  • Sip on warm water, or other warm liquids, such as clear broth, throughout the day.
  • Place a warm towel on the chest while lying down, to relieve any breathing difficulties
  • Apply a pinch of turmeric paste on the chest
  • Mix some black pepper powder to a teaspoon of honey and consume the mixture
The home remedies for wheezing mentioned above are fairly safe, if used correctly. However, it is best to consult a doctor, before trying any of them.
