The mucus that is secreted by the throat is commonly referred to as phlegm. An allergy, infection or excessive smoking can lead to an inflammation in the throat giving rise to increased production of phlegm. Studies have shown the best way to tackle phlegm involves identifying the exact causes responsible for the condition and by relieving the inflammation of the throat.
The production of phlegm is caused due to the body's response to an inflammation brought on by an alien irritant or dust particle in the throat, when the individual is affected by an allergy or infection. A substance called histamine is produced by special cells in the throat called mast cells. This happens when the mast cells in the throat tissue come into contact with the particles causing the irritation in the throat. The histamine is also responsible for causing an increase in the production of mucus and swelling. These two actions are performed by the body in order to get rid of the foreign particles or irritants stuck in the throat. This behavior of the body is completely normal and is essential for the regular maintenance of the body. However, it is important to bear in mind that the hypersensitivity of this mechanism can also lead to death, caused due to the constricting of the airways and the lungs filling with mucus. These possibilities are symptomatic of conditions such as asthma and pneumonia. Patients suffering from asthma experience allergic reactions to several stimuli that are responsible in causing airways to constrict and thus allowing reduced air into the lungs. On the other hand, mucus fills up in the air sacs of the lungs causing suffocation in individuals suffering from pneumonia.
Decongestants and antihistamines are routinely prescribed by doctors to relieve the symptoms of excessive phlegm. In more serious cases, your doctor is likely to prescribed corticosteroids which will help in reducing the inflammatory response. The inflammatory response can be also reduced by trying a simple home remedy. Prepare a normal tomato soup which is not too thick in consistency and add spices such as thinly ground ginger and garlic, crushed black pepper and salt. The combination of these natural ingredients works together in reducing the inflammation present in the throat. Moreover, they are also known to be effective against any infection present in the throat due to their powerful antiseptic properties. Ensure that you identify and remove any possible sources of allergens in your immediate environment as these can also contribute to infections.
