(25 Aug 2007)

There are a number of reasons why you might be experiencing a metallic taste on your tongue. The positive news is that this is not a serious condition and is mainly a concern of hygiene.

This happens if you have poor dental hygiene and do not brush your teeth and gums on a regular basis.

This might cause an abscess to form and pus accumulates inside it. This leads to the metallic taste on your mouth. If this is the case, then visit your dentist to get the teeth cleaned and make sure to gargle and drink a lot of water to get rid of the taste. You would need to change your daily habits to incorporate cleaning your mouth area a minimum two times a day. You can also take a pinch of baking soda and rub this on your tongue and teeth gently for a period of five to ten minutes. This will help in removing the metallic feeling and your mouth will feel clean and fresh. Make sure to do this every four to five hours. You could also use Listerine or another mouth wash along with a tongue cleaner to remove the metallic taste from your mouth. Every morning after brushing your teeth, you can use a tongue cleaner to rid yourself of the taste of gingivitis that would have formed throughout the nightt

While this is not a serious problem or a cause of concern, it can be annoying. The best way to deal with this is to brush your teeth frequently, floss, and scrape your tongue. The problem will go away in a few months. A warm salt water gargle once daily is helpful as well. If you are taking blood pressure medication, this may be the cause and you need to see your doctor about getting a different kind of medication. Washing your mouth out with yarrow tea will help in case of an infection of the gums. Also using a mouth wash of mint and warm water will help remove the unpleasant taste from your mouth. Drinking lots of water can help flush out your system in case you have some extra toxic build up, but really this problem will go away on its own if you just wait it out and treat the symptoms to avoid being miserable.  You can actually create a mouth wash from cilantro as well by boiling a couple of ounces of fresh cilantro in two cups of water. Strain off the cilantro and either drink it as a tea or use it as a mouth wash.
