Carpal tunnel is a huge problem, especially in the last decade because people are spending so much time on computers. Another leading cause of this, especially among young people, are things like handheld video games and PDA’s. The best way to avoid carpal tunnel is to manage your time on the computer or PDA effectively. Do not spend long periods of time working on these devices without stopping to stretch and massage your hands and lower arms. It is good for your eyes to take a quick break too!  Take a 5 minute break every hour spent working to stretch and massage. To stretch your arms and wrists, you need to first rotate your hand clockwise and then counter clockwise. Do both hands about 30 times each and then interlock your fingers with the top of your hands facing up, apply downward pressure to stretch, then turn your hands so the palms are facing upward and stretch again. Do this ten times each way and then massage your hands and arms from the elbow down.  Try to massage each hand and arm for 3 minutes. This will help improve circulation and relieve any nerve problems.  If your hands and arms are bothering you after a long day at the office, you can apply some liniment at night or soak your arms and hands in Epsom salt and warm water to relieve the muscle tension.
