Hiccups are an annoying condition that affects many people right from infants to elderly persons. Technically, a hiccup is a spasm that occurs in the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the division between the chest and the abdominal cavity.
It expands and contracts to facilitate breathing. When the diaphragm spasm suddenly, the individual will experience a sudden inhalation. This will cause the hiccup sound to be generated in the throat or chest. There is no real evidence about what causes hiccups to occur. It is known that the nerve that controls the diaphragm plays a part in this process. Why and how the process of hiccups actually occurs is as yet unknown.
An attack of hiccups may last for a few minutes or even for a few days. People have been known to suffer from chronic hiccups which can last for long periods of time. The frequency of hiccups differs from person to person and even from one attack to the next. Hiccups do not drastically affect an individual’s ability to function normally. They are essentially an irritant that may affect the individual’s quality of life. It is necessary that quick treatment be given hiccups in newborns and hiccups in infants occur. This treatment should also be given carefully as sometimes it could lead to a worse condition. Hiccups during pregnancy are a common feature and can be dealt with quiet easily. A person suffering from hiccups will seek swift hiccups treatment to help cure the problem. As there is no medical reason understood for this problem, there is no medical hiccups cure that is widely used. Instead, people rely on home remedies for hiccups. It should be stressed at this point that there are no proven home remedies for hiccups. Some remedies are unique to people of a particular culture. One can, however, try the most commonly recommended home remedies for hiccups. One of these methods should surely work as a hiccups cure.
Though the exact causes of hiccups in adults are not yet known there are many home remedies for hiccups which involve water. People with hiccups may drink water slowly or rapidly to ward off the attack. Some people also believe in drinking water from the front of a glass while tilting the head downwards and inwards. In this position, swallowing requires extra effort and this may help to halt the spasms of the diaphragm.
Another popular set of home remedies for hiccups involve stretching exercises that expand and contract the chest. Patients may hold their arms to the side or hold their arms up high to get over the attack. Some people hold their arms out by the sides and hold their breath while seeking a hiccups cure. It is important not to hold the breath for too long as this can cause dizziness which itself may cause other problems like a loss of balance.
Another set of home remedies for hiccups involve the use of concentration. Many people believe that distraction is the best form of hiccups treatment. When an individual is concentrating especially hard on some task, he or she may get over an attack of hiccups. This type of hiccups treatment may also be administered in the form of scaring an individual so that they are suddenly tense for a brief moment. This may help to tighten and loosen their muscles which can work as a hiccups cure. Many people may also ignore their problem and allow it to go away on its own. Chronic hiccups in children, infants as well as babies could be cured with the help of some sugar. Sugar is sweet and helps the baby relax, thus also curing the hiccup.
Individuals may seek medical hiccups treatment if they have an attack of the problem that lasts for many days that does not seem to be going away. In such a situation, the hiccups cure used is that of a muscle relaxant. This is not a cure for the problem that has caused the hiccups as science has been unable to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Muscle relaxants work as a hiccups cure because they simply loosen the muscles in the body including those used for breathing.
