Benzonite can be of two types namely sodium benzonite and calcium benzonite.

Sodium benzonite is mainly used for drilling mud for gas and oil wells or as a sealant due to its property of swelling.

Calcium benzonite is often used as a part of detoxification diet in combination with water. It is believed that microscopic structure of calcium benzonite helps to draw impurities from the digestive track, which is than excreted along with the benzonite from the body.
