Natural Cure for Ear Infection

what can I do to help an ear infection?
(21 Aug 2007)

A ear infection can affect any part of the ear, from the ear canal to the middle ear.  In adults an infection in the ear is sometime caused when the Eustachian tube, gets infected.  This tube connects our inner ear with the nasal passage, to help drain the fluid from our ears and also to maintain a balance between pressure level within the body, with that outside of it.

When the mucus or fluid accumulates in this tube, it becomes susceptible to infection. Furthermore bacteria often enter the middle ear through this Eustachian tube. This can lead to an infection of the middle ear, causing its lining to swell up. This can, in turn, block the Eustachian tube resulting in the accumulation of fluid. Water that is left in the ears or even a mucus deposit in the Eustachian tubes from blowing ones nose can cause an infection. The general symptoms of a ear infection are: pain, a temporary loss of hearing, ear blockage, and fever accompanied with dizziness. These symptoms if left unchecked can have serious repercussions, at times even damaging the ear drum.

A ear infection can be treated with simple home remedies. Take 1-2 garlic pods and crush the juice out of them. Put a few drops into your ear, this will help any water, which may be trapped in the Eustachian tube to leak out. It will also help to prevent any infections as well as fight off any existing ones.  Heat some olive oil or castor oil in a teaspoon and wait for it to cool down to a favorable temperature. While it is still slightly warm it can be poured into the ear. This again will help drain out any water that has accumulated within the ear. Vitamin E oil also helps with an ear infection. Take a vitamin E capsule and puncture it with a clean pin or needle, next squeeze a few drops into your ear.

If you are experiencing pain then you could apply heat packs on to the outside of the ear and the base of the neck. Make sure the pack is not too hot, lest you burn yourself.  Take 2-3 mango leaves and boil them in about a cup of water. Once the solution has reached a lukewarm temperature, put a few drops into your ear. This will help alleviate the pain as well as get rid of any infection.

Please bear in mind, that these are general remedies. Any kind of treatment will depend largely on the kind of infection that one has. It is therefore important to visit a doctor to get a definite diagnosis.

Chewing of garlic or administering garlic oil into the ear is helpful. Steam inhalation proves beneficial. Lime juice into the ear helps in combating infection.
