Before prescribing herbal medicine or supplements it is good to know what medications (prescribed and OTC) you are taking. Herbs in general are safer when taken in their natural state (as in a tea) as opposed to tinctures or standardized extracts.

My current recommendation would be to incorporate sea vegetables into your diet (seaweed: kombu, arame, hijiki, nori etc.) and find an herbalist  or naturopathic doctor who can help you make the right choices.

You can find a Naturopathic Doctor in your area at www.naturopathic.com

Good Luck,

Bauhinia veriegata (purple mountain ebony) is mainly useful for functioning of thyroid. Please visit this link for my answer to a similar question. http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/askquestion/482/view_q.html

You can visit the website link in my answer for more information on many more herbs which are beneficial and a herbal paste you can make and use at home to reduce swelling.
