A sty is basically a result of clogging of the oil glands around the eyelashes or a bacterial infection. Try the following home remedies to get rid of the sty -

  • Place warm tea bags over the sty and relax for 10-15 minutes. The tannic acid in tea helps to heal the sty.

  • Warm water compresses done with the help of a clean washed cotton cloth kept on the eye for few minutes, will help the sty to break open and drain on its own. Repeat 4-5 times a day. Warm guava leaves can also be used to place on the cotton cloth used for warm compress.

  • Let the sty heal on its own, never try to pop or squeeze a sty; it will be painful and may make the infection worse.
  • Wash your eye with ¼ tsp baking soda added in ½ cup water to get rid of the infection.
  • An eye infection can spread easily so avoid sharing towels or handkerchiefs with other people.
  • Avoid wearing any eye makeup or contact lenses.
A sty is usually harmless irrespective of its appearance and pain. Some sty can be too stubborn, consult a specialist if the swelling or pain increases.
