Head lice can be described as tiny parasites that live on the scalp of humans and rely on human blood as a source of nourishment. The infestation by head lice is a very common problem that affects people all over the world. Although this problem can be seen in people of all ages, it is a lot more common in children between the school-going ages, than it is in adults.

This problem can be a very embarrassing one, as people who suffer from head lice tend to itch their scalp uncontrollably.

Since most people associate the presence of head lice with the lack of hygiene, this can be a major source of embarrassment, not just for the children, but also for their parents. However, that is not necessarily true as even some of the most hygienic children can get affected by head lice. Regardless of what the causes of this problem are, these parasites can cause a lot of discomfort to children, which is why it is important for parents to get rid of lice as soon as possible. Unfortunately, many parents have realized the hard way, that getting rid of head lice can be quite a challenge. However, head lice removal cannot be delayed, or else the infestation spreads, which makes the cleansing process all the more difficult. Because of the head lice life cycle, these critters can multiply very fast. Moreover, head lice can spread from once person to the rest of the family within a few days. Therefore, several parents consult doctors and other health experts on ways to get rid of lice effectively.

How to get rid of lice?

The best way to get rid of lice is by using a lice comb and cleaning the child’s hair with it thoroughly. There are different types of lice combs available, which are suited for different purposes. It is best for parents to choose the lice combs that can help get rid of lice as well as the nits (lice eggs) at the same time. Apart from the comb, there are other home remedies for head lice too, that can help expedite the cleansing process. Many over the counter hair products like shampoos and hair oils contain chemicals which help in getting rid of head lice as well as their eggs. However, some parents do worry that the chemicals present in such products may be too harsh and could harm the skin of their children. Fortunately, there are certain home remedies that can also be very effective in eliminating lice from the hair. Given below are some of the most common methods people use to get rid of lice.
  • Mix two tablespoons of vinegar, with around six tablespoons of fresh water, and apply the solution to the child’s scalp. For best results, this solution should be left on all night long and the head should be covered with a piece of cloth. The hair can be rinsed with a mild shampoo and warm water the next morning.
  • Take a few finely chopped pieces of apple and rub them on to the skin, and massage it in for around 20 minutes or so. After a few minutes, wash the hair off, to eliminate head lice.
  • Mix some camphor powder with coconut oil and apply it to the scalp every night before sleeping. Rinse the oil off with warm water and shampoo first thing in the morning.
While the methods to get rid of lice mentioned above are quite safe if they are used correctly, it may be best to consult a hair or skin expert, before using any of them, especially on children.
